The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University is committed to delivering an outstanding undergraduate educational experience that equips future physicians with the knowledge, clinical skills, and professional values required to provide high-quality healthcare for women throughout every stage of life.
Our undergraduate module is delivered during the fourth year of the medical curriculum and provides an integrated learning experience that combines basic sciences with real-world clinical practice. Students develop a comprehensive understanding of normal and high-risk pregnancy, labor and delivery, gynecological disorders, reproductive endocrinology, infertility, family planning, urogynecology, gynecologic oncology, and preventive women's healthcare.
Learning extends far beyond the classroom. Students rotate through busy outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, labor and delivery units, operating theatres, ultrasound services, and specialized clinics under the supervision of experienced faculty members. This rich clinical exposure enables students to apply their knowledge while developing confidence in patient assessment and clinical decision-making.
Throughout the rotation, students gain practical experience in:
History taking and clinical examination in obstetrics and gynecology
Antenatal care and assessment of pregnancy
Recognition and management of common obstetric and gynecological conditions
Interpretation of ultrasound, cardiotocography (CTG), and laboratory investigations
Essential clinical procedures including Pap smear collection, vaginal swab sampling, and intrauterine device (IUD) insertion and removal
Professional communication, teamwork, ethical practice, and patient-centered care.
The department adopts a modern, student-centered approach to medical education. Teaching is delivered through a combination of interactive lectures, bedside teaching, problem-based learning (PBL), team-based learning (TBL), simulation and skills laboratory sessions, Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) training, and small-group tutorials. These methods promote clinical reasoning, critical thinking, collaboration, and lifelong learning.
Students are assessed using a comprehensive system that evaluates both knowledge and clinical competence. Assessment methods include written examinations, OSCEs, clinical case discussions, workplace-based assessments, research presentations, and quality improvement projects, ensuring graduates are well prepared for future clinical training.
As one of the largest academic women's healthcare centers in the region, the department offers students exceptional exposure to a diverse range of clinical conditions within a high-volume tertiary referral hospital. Supported by dedicated faculty members, advanced simulation facilities, specialized clinical units, an IVF center, fetal medicine services, and the historic Naguib Mahfouz Museum, students graduate with a strong foundation in evidence-based women's healthcare and the professionalism expected of future physicians.
